Standard Garage Door Sizes: What Fits Your Home and Your Cars

Garage door sizes come up in exactly two situations: you are building or replacing a door, or you just bought a truck that barely clears the opening. Most homes in Dallas-Fort Worth run one of four sizes, and the odds are good yours is 16 feet wide by 7 feet tall. But the number stamped on your old door is only half the story. Headroom, backroom, sideroom, and the weight of the new door all decide what will actually fit and work.

The short answer

Standard residential garage doors are 7 feet tall, with 8 feet a common upgrade. Single doors are usually 8, 9, or 10 feet wide. Double doors are usually 16 feet wide, sometimes 18. Width is always listed first, so a 9×7 door is 9 feet wide and 7 feet tall, and the door is ordered to match the finished opening exactly rather than a little smaller.

What are the standard garage door sizes?

Standard garage door sizes fall into a short list that covers most American houses built in the last sixty years. Clopay, one of the larger manufacturers, lists stock widths of 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 15, 16, and 18 feet, Seven feet is the standard height, and 8-foot doors are widely available on the same models.

Here is what you will actually run into on a North Texas street:

  • 8 feet wide by 7 feet tall. The old single. Common on homes built before the 1980s and on alley-entry garages in older Dallas and Fort Worth neighborhoods.
  • 9 feet wide by 7 feet tall. The modern single. That extra foot is the difference between opening your car door inside the garage and shuffling out sideways.
  • 16 feet wide by 7 feet tall. The default double. Two sedans or crossovers fit without drama.
  • 16 or 18 feet wide by 8 feet tall. What builders in Frisco, Prosper, and the newer parts of Fort Worth put on three-car garages and homes with lifted trucks in mind.

A 7-foot door is normally built from four 21-inch sections. An 8-foot door is usually four 24-inch sections, or a mix of 21s and 18s. That matters more than it sounds, because section height sets how tightly the door curves into the horizontal track, which in turn sets how much headroom you need.

How do you measure for a new garage door?

Measuring for a garage door means four numbers, not one. You need the finished opening, the headroom above it, the sideroom on each side, and the backroom behind it. Get any of the four wrong and the door either will not fit or will not run right.

Opening. Measure the width and height of the framed opening at its narrowest and shortest points, not counting the stop molding. The door is ordered to that size. Unlike a window, a sectional garage door does not get undersized to leave a gap, because it seals against the jamb from the inside.

Headroom. That is the clear space between the top of the opening and the ceiling or the first floor joist. Clopay calls for a minimum of 12 inches with a torsion spring system and 10 inches with extension springs. If you want an opener, plan on more. Low-headroom track is a real product and it works, but it changes the hardware and it is not something to guess at.

Sideroom. You need solid framing beside the opening for the vertical track to bolt to. Clopay specs a minimum of 3 and 3/4 inches on each side, plus 4 and 1/2 inches above the opening for a torsion spring assembly. Old houses love to hide a water heater or a light switch box right in that strip.

Backroom. Measure from the opening straight back into the garage. The rule of thumb from the manufacturer is door height plus 18 inches, which gives the horizontal track and the opener rail somewhere to live. A 7-foot door wants about 8 and a half feet of clear depth behind the opening.

Will a full-size truck fit through a standard garage door?

A full-size pickup fits through a 9-foot-wide door with room to spare and squeaks through an 8-foot door with almost none. The numbers are tighter than most people expect, and mirrors are the reason.

Ford publishes the 2026 F-150 spec sheet with three width figures: 79.9 inches for the body, 95.7 inches with the mirrors out, and 105.9 inches with trailer tow mirrors extended. An 8-foot door is 96 inches. So a stock F-150 with its mirrors out has about three tenths of an inch of clearance on an 8-foot opening, and a truck with tow mirrors does not fit at all. Fold the mirrors and the same truck drops to 83.6 inches and sails through.

That is the single most useful thing on this page. The scraped mirror housings and scuffed jamb trim we see on DFW service calls almost always trace back to an 8-foot-wide opening and a truck that has grown since the house was built. If you are replacing a door on a 1970s single-car garage and you drive a half-ton, widening the opening to 9 feet is worth talking to a contractor about while the old door is already coming off.

Should you get a 7-foot or 8-foot tall garage door?

An 8-foot-tall garage door is worth it if you own a lifted truck, a van, a vehicle with a roof rack or cargo box, or you plan to hang a car lift or storage racks from the ceiling. For everything else, 7 feet is fine and it is what your opener was probably built for.

Here is the part nobody mentions at the showroom. Standard opener rails are built for a 7-foot door. Going to 8 feet means the trolley has to travel another foot, and LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and the other major brands all sell 8-foot rail extension kits for exactly that reason. If you swap in a taller door and reuse the old opener without the extension, the door will not open all the way. We would rather tell you that before the door is on order than after.

The taller door is also heavier, which brings us to the thing that actually breaks.

Why does door size change which springs you need?

Garage door springs are sized to one specific door. Wire diameter, inside diameter, and spring length are calculated from the door weight and the height it travels. Change the size of the door and the old springs are no longer correct, even if they look identical and even if they are only a year old.

This is the mistake we see most often on doors that were replaced by someone other than a door company. A homeowner or a general handyman hangs a heavier insulated door on the existing hardware, the counterbalance is now under-sprung, and the opener spends the next few months dragging weight it was never meant to lift. The gear strips, or the springs fail early, or the door slams the last foot on the way down.

Standard torsion springs are rated around 10,000 cycles, where one cycle is one full open and one close. Four cycles a day, which is two trips out and back, works out to roughly seven years. High-cycle springs rated for 25,000 cycles or more are available and make sense on a door that runs six or eight times a day. Either way, matching the spring to the door is not optional, and it is not DIY work. A wound torsion spring stores enough energy to break a wrist. One double door or two singles?

Two 9×7 doors and one 16×7 door cover about the same wall, but they behave differently. Two singles give you a center post to aim at, half the door out of service when something breaks, and lighter doors that are easier on hardware. One wide door gives you a clean opening you can back a boat trailer through and a simpler front elevation.

The catch is that you cannot switch from two singles to one double by ordering a wider door. The post between the two openings usually carries roof load, sometimes a second story. Removing it means a new header sized by an engineer, temporary shoring while the old framing comes out, and in most DFW cities a permit and an inspection. That is a framing job with a garage door at the end of it, not a door job.

There is also a wear argument for two singles that people miss. A 16-foot door is a long, flexible panel. Without a strut across the top section, a wide door flexes every time the opener pulls on the center of it, and that flex is what eventually bends the top section around the opener bracket.

What garage door sizes work for an RV, boat, or trailer?

RV and oversized-vehicle doors start where residential sizes stop. Doors 10, 12, and 14 feet tall exist and are ordered as specials. Widths up to 18 or 20 feet are available. The right size depends on what you are storing, so measure the vehicle and add margin.

A foot of height clearance and about a foot and a half of width clearance over the vehicle is a sane target. Roof air conditioners, antennas, and awning arms add height that is not in the brochure spec, and mirrors add width. A Class B camper van may clear a 9-foot door. A Class A motorhome will not, and careful driving does not change that. Taller doors also need more headroom for the track. A standard garage with an 8-foot wall plate is not becoming an RV bay no matter what door you order.

What size garage door do most Dallas-Fort Worth homes have?

Most DFW homes have either a 16×7 double or a pair of 8×7 or 9×7 singles, and the split tracks pretty closely with when the house was built. Mid-century neighborhoods in Dallas, Fort Worth, and the older inner-ring suburbs lean toward narrow singles, often alley-entry, sometimes with a driveway approach so short that you are turning the wheel as you cross the threshold. Newer construction out north leans wide and tall.

North Texas adds two wrinkles to the size conversation. The first is heat. A garage that hits well over 100 degrees on a July afternoon in Dallas cooks whatever is inside it, and a bigger door means a bigger uninsulated surface facing the sun if you go with a single-layer steel door. If the size is going up, that is the moment to look at insulated construction and at what door material makes sense.

The second is wind. The International Residential Code sets a design wind speed for every location, and garage doors have to meet a design pressure rating for that speed. Inland North Texas requirements are less demanding than the Gulf Coast, but a wide door is a big sail on the largest opening in the house, and the requirement scales with the size of the opening. Your city building department is the authority on what your specific address needs. Ask before you order, especially on an 18-foot door.

What can you check yourself before calling an installer?

You can safely gather every number an installer needs. It takes a tape measure and about ten minutes. What you should not do is touch the hardware holding the door up.

Unplug the opener first. Then measure the framed opening, look up and count the clear inches to the ceiling, run your hand down each side to see what is in the way, and pace off the depth to the back wall. Write the four numbers down. Everything past that, disconnecting cables, unbolting bottom brackets, unwinding springs, belongs to a technician. If your door is already binding, dragging, or coming off the track, that is a garage door repair question first and a sizing question second.

What is the most common garage door size?

The 16-foot wide by 7-foot tall double door is the most common size on American homes, and 9 feet wide by 7 feet tall is the most common single. Width is always listed first. Both sizes are stock items for every major manufacturer, so they are the quickest to get and the easiest to find parts for.

How much headroom does a garage door need?

Clopay specifies a minimum of 12 inches of clear headroom above the opening for a torsion spring system and 10 inches for extension springs. Add more if you want a garage door opener. Where the ceiling is lower than that, low-headroom track and hardware kits are available, and a jackshaft opener that mounts on the wall beside the door can free up the space a ceiling-mounted unit would take.

Can I put a bigger garage door in my existing opening?

Not without changing the opening. A sectional garage door is built to the exact size of the finished opening, so a wider or taller door means new framing and a new header. Widening an opening or removing a center post between two doors affects how the roof is carried and normally needs an engineered header, a permit, and an inspection.

Will a full-size pickup truck fit through a standard garage door?

Yes, through a 9-foot-wide door comfortably. Ford lists the 2026 F-150 at 95.7 inches wide with the mirrors extended, and an 8-foot door is 96 inches, so an 8-foot opening leaves almost no margin. Folding the mirrors drops the same truck to 83.6 inches. Trucks fitted with trailer tow mirrors measure 105.9 inches extended and will not clear an 8-foot opening at all.

Do I need new springs if I change my garage door size?

Yes. Torsion springs are calculated from the weight of the door and the distance it travels, using wire size, inside diameter, and length. A different size or a heavier insulated door changes that math, so the old springs will no longer balance the door. Running a door on the wrong springs strains the opener and shortens the life of both. Spring work is professional work because of the stored energy involved.

How do I find out what size my garage door is?

Measure the width and height of the framed opening with the door closed, working in feet and inches. Do not measure the door panel itself, since old doors are sometimes trimmed and jambs get rebuilt over the years. Round to the nearest standard size and you have your answer, but let an installer confirm it before anything is ordered.
