Response time is the metric a station is judged on, and the bay door sits directly in it. A door that takes 15 seconds to clear is 15 seconds added to every single call, all year.
That changes what you optimize for. On a warehouse you buy for durability and cost. On a station you buy for speed and reliability, then durability, then cost. Manual release mechanisms exist on commercial operators, but they get neglected because they’re almost never used. A release that’s seized or a chain hoist that nobody has pulled in three years is a problem you find at the worst moment. We check release operation as part of service, and it’s worth including in station-level drills.
Safety sensors and apparatus clearance
Bay doors run in a tight envelope. Apparatus clearance is often measured in inches, and a door that starts to close early or a sensor that misreads is how a door meets a truck.
Sensor alignment, limit settings and reversing system function are core to bay door service. Sensors get bumped, knocked out of alignment by gear and hoses, and fouled by dust from an open bay. They need checking on a schedule, not after an incident.
Station entry doors, living quarters and glass
The rest of the station is a building like any other, with hardware that fails in ordinary ways. Entry doors, doors between the bay and living quarters, dorm and dayroom doors, and the public entrance where residents come in for a blood pressure check or a car seat install.
The bay-to-quarters door matters more than it looks. It separates apparatus exhaust and noise from where crews sleep, and a door that doesn’t latch or seal defeats that. We repair and replace closers, pivots, exit devices, continuous hinges, hollow metal doors and frames, and aluminum storefront entries.
